Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Relief Networks for Isolated Forest Communities
Remote forest hamlets and low-lying river islands (chars) are vulnerable during severe weather events such as monsoon floods, storms, and winter cold waves. Flimsy mud-and-thatch dwellings in isolated regions offer limited protection against environmental extremes.
During severe weather, swollen streams and unpaved paths can temporarily isolate hamlets, making emergency assistance difficult to receive immediately.
To support vulnerable communities during emergencies, the India Tribal Care Trust (ITCT) maintains a Social Care & Disaster Relief Network, providing winter warmth drives, flood relief outreach, and emergency supplies.
Key Relief Initiatives
ITCT's emergency preparedness framework operates across three key areas:
1. Emergency Supply Stockpiles
ITCT maintains regional supply points stocked with essential emergency items:- Dry Rations: Rice, pulses, flattened rice (Chira), jaggery, and biscuits.
- Clean Water & Hygiene: Water purification tablets, soap, and clean water containers.
- Shelter Supplies: Tarpaulins, ropes, blankets, and lanterns.
2. Riverboat Outreach for Flood Relief
In low-lying delta regions, ITCT utilizes motorized riverboats to reach waterlogged villages, distributing emergency ration packs and water purification supplies.
3. Annual Winter Warmth Drives
During cold winter months in hill regions, ITCT distributes warm woolen blankets, sweaters, and shawls to protect elderly residents and young children.
4. Local Youth Emergency Teams (Van & Jal Rakshak)
